The British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS) states that an occupational hygienist has the following core skills:
- The ability to recognise real or potential hazards related to physical, chemical or biological factors that can impact on worker health and wellbeing.
- Expertise in assessing risks associated with these hazards, and in measuring environmental parameters and worker exposures to assist in risk assessment.
- The knowledge and experience to propose practical solutions to reduce and control risks to health.
- A detailed knowledge of the legal framework covering the practice of occupational hygiene and workplace health and safety.
- The ability to educate, train, inform and advise personnel at all levels within an organisation on occupational hygiene issues.
